A LIFE RECLAIMED:  The Background

Sheila, her mom, Piedad (my sister), and I talked about documenting Sheila's experiences for many years but only decided to develop it as a book in Spring 2007.  From Sheila's notes and contributions, recollections, and photos from various family members and friends, I started writing her story in September 2008.  After several layers of editing, the book slowly took a form of its own.

As a first-time author, deciding between a traditional publisher and a POD (print-on-demand) publisher was easy.  Firstly, I did not want to invest a lot of money in the book.  I just wanted it published for my niece and her mother.  Moreover, a traditional publisher would not waste time on someone unknown like me.  So, I decided on going the POD route but finding the right POD was a challenge.  With no one to advise or guide me, I went on the web and read writers' blogs about PODs for months.  Finally, I settled on Booklocker.com.  In late June 2009, I emailed Angela Hoy my manuscript and much to my delight, Booklocker agreed to publish my book.  Working with them has been a positive and pleasant experience.

In April 2009, I started painting Sheila's portrait which I always intended to use for the book cover.  After putting the final touches on the manuscript and working closely with the book designer on the interior and cover design, the book was finally published on September 30, 2009.

Sheila has started her own blog.  It is quite an interesting read.  Check it out.

In December 2009, I heard from Hanna Latvus,
a reader from Finland who contracted meningococcemia in 2008. After months of surgery and with her prosthetics, she has resumed her life, got married and is pursuing a new career in accounting which will allow her to work from home. She found the book on the internet and told me how it made her feel good to hear about some similarities between her and Sheila's experience. You can read more about it in my blog (http://www.bookbycangeles.blogspot.com/).

My blog: (http://bookbycangeles.blogspot.com/)

In October 2009, I started a blog about my book
where everyone is welcome to share comments, experiences, and suggestions.  I heard from a mother who lost her son to meningococcemia.  I quote her below:

"
As a mother who lost her son to meningococcemia (meningococcal meningitis), I urge all parents to be aware of the symptoms of meningitis and the available vaccine. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends routine vaccination for all children ages 11-18 at the earliest possible time and for all college freshmen living in dorms. Please visit the non-profit National Meningitis Association, www.nmaus.org for more information. No family should endure this tragedy."

I didn't know what to say about her loss.  I felt sad for her but appreciated that she shared her thoughts.  Parents, take heed.  Protect your children with the proper vaccination.

Many thanks,

Cynthia
